Tech-savvy jewellers keep up with demandMonday, 1st October 2007 (2707 views) A top Indian jeweller is using a computer program to allow his customers to have more input into the design of their gold jewellery, according to the Economic Times.Mehul Choksi, chairman of the Gitanjali group, which owns several jewellery brands, told the newspaper that the program lets customers make changes to existing pieces of jewellery or personally design items for themselves. KD Desai, the director of technical services at the Livingstone Group, a company that works to provide consultancy services to jewellers, said that computer software can design gold jewellery with "geometrical perfection". "And once the design is finished the exact cost of the jewellery and the weight of the jewellery can also be determined through the software," he told the Economic Times. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) machines have been in India for nearly a decade. The technology directs the motion of a machine tool to manufacture the shape that was drawn in the program, manufacturing moulds and components that can be used to mass-produce gold jewellery. According to the Economic Times, improvements in computer technology allows for better quality jewellery at a reduced cost of production.
