The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) in Dayton, Ohio, is set to unveil a collection of Roman artefacts, including gold coins and jewellery, many of which have never previously been seen by the public.

Running from September 21st to January 6th 2008, The Roman World: Religions and Everyday Life will feature artefacts on loan from the Brooklyn Museum in New York City, as well as the Columbus Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Emory University's Carlos Museum and items from the DAI private collection.

"When we think of Romans, we have this monolithic idea of empire builders and gladiators," guest curator Sally Struthers told the Dayton Daily News, explaining that the society was open-minded and multicultural.

She said that the "melting pot" culture of the Roman Empire, particularly with regard to religion, is emphasised by the artefacts on display.

According to Jewellery Mall, gold jewellery from ancient Roman times is characterised by enamelled representations of animals and flowers, as well as traditional Christian and Islamic holy images.
