The Malaysian prime minister, Abdullah Badawi, was given a limited edition gold plated mobile phone in order to recognise 50 years of his nation's independence, it has been revealed.

Cellular-news reports that a similar gold handset, manufactured by Inobel - a subsidiary of UMV, was also presented to the head of state's wife.

Inobel notes that the 24-carat gold phone "exudes class and presence" and is limited to 5,000 pieces.

"We felt it was most appropriate to present this pair of phones to the prime minister and his wife on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Malaysia's independence," UMW group chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin was quoted by Cellular-news as saying.

He added that the "pride and prestige" of the occasion is reflected by use of 24-carat gold.

Furthermore, Inobel reveals that part of the proceeds from the sale of each gold handset will go to selected charities.
