Bulgaria customs officials seize gold jewelleryTuesday, 14th August 2007 (2749 views) Customs officials at a Bulgarian border have seized a significant quantity of gold jewellery and foiled two smuggling attempts, it has been revealed.Officials at Bulgaria's Kapitan Andreevo border check-point discovered 24 kilogrammes of gold jewellery in a truck which had Turkish number plates. According to Sofia News Agency, roughly two kilos of the gold was wrapped in six packets hidden in the driver's cabin. "[A] few hours later the border police discovered another 21,640 kilos of jewels in a secret box in a bus, moving from Istanbul to Skopje," commented the news agency. Rings, bracelets, necklaces and chains were split into 38 packs and hidden in the bus, according to the Sofia Echo. The value of the gold jewellery was pronounced to be 640,820 Bulgarian leva (£222,203).
