A gold ring that had been lost for a number of years has been discovered by a diver, it has been reported.

The Citrus County Chronicle reveals that Mark McBride of Beverly Hills went snorkelling in the Rainbow River, noticing "something twinkling" under the water after about half an hour into the activity.

Noticing the name Phillip Nichols inscribed on the inside of the 14-carat gold ring, Mr McBride then took it upon himself to hunt down the ring's rightful owner.

Mr McBride told the newspaper he thought, "I bet the owner would like to have this back".

"I never thought I would ever see the ring again," Mr Nichols said after the finder tracked down his mother in order to return the errant gold item.

According to Mr Nichols, the ring had been lost 20 years previously when he was with his friends and despite launching an immediate search he could not locate his school class-ring.

Mr Nichols added that the ring has been returned in time for his 20-year school reunion.
