Gold items popular at New Zealand jewellery auction

Thursday, 26th July 2007 (2785 views)

Jewellery designer Roley McIntyre recently sold a number of bespoke gold items at a national jewellery competition in New Zealand, it has been revealed.

New Zealand website Stuff reports that a pair of 18-carat white and yellow gold Maori-inspired cufflinks sold for a set price of NZ $8,450 (£3,288) within 20 minutes of being shown at the country's National Jewellery Show.

The cufflinks were designed as one-offs and in addition to the gold outlay feature white and black diamonds with a black onyx feature stone and Maori war-canoe inspired designs.

"Design is very subjective and you can never be sure how the judges will react, so in choosing something that I believed would stand out from the 70 other entries I was taking a risk on whether I would appeal to the judges' tastes," Ms McIntyre told the North Shore Times.

Ms McIntyre's Lode jewellery company creates bespoke items, with one customer requesting an 18-carat gold replica of her teddy bear.
