Gold wedding rings 'sell well'

Wednesday, 4th July 2007 (2870 views)

A typical gold wedding band in the US retailed at around $150 (£75) in 2006, which is more than double the average retail price for other categories of jewellery, it has been revealed.

Idex Online research shows that broken down, gold neckwear retailed on average at $112.86, earrings at $38.90, bracelets for $109.49 and other rings for $166.23.

According to Idex, the number of people getting married in the US looks to rise steeply in the coming decade.

"For speciality jewellers, the wedding band business is even better. The average ticket for a gold wedding band at typical specialty jeweller in America is about $261, almost double the overall average ticket for gold wedding bands," Idex noted.

However, the diamond exchange site observes that the divorce rate in the US is dropping, meaning that there will be fewer purchases of second-marriage rings.

Wedding rings are typically made of gold and are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, as it contains the vena amoris or vein of love.
