Gold shoppers 'go to specialty merchants'

Thursday, 28th June 2007 (2847 views)

Specialty jewellery merchants in the US sell 49 per cent of all the gold jewellery purchased by consumers in the country, it has been claimed.

According to research from Idex, the international diamond exchange, the gold market has remained constant since the 1990s for such retailers, unlike the overall market share which has fluctuated.

Furthermore, Idex reports that this is a surprising development considering the majority of consumers purchase gold jewellery as a fashion accessory - a market that department stores, mass merchants and fashion stores are more associated with.

"Interestingly, most specialty jewellers don't typically have leading edge fashion jewellery in their stores. We speculate that it has to do with the integrity - or perhaps the lack of perceived integrity - of other retailers," Idex notes.

Idex also reports that during the late 1990s, department stores took a successful share in the gold jewellery market although this pattern was not sustained.

In other gold jewellery news, president of the Guyana National Association of Goldsmiths and Jewellers Dominic Gaskin has called for less regulation and more official encouragement for the export of jewellery.
