London exhibition showcases gold jewelleryWednesday, 6th June 2007 (3538 views) A new exhibition in London is set to display gold jewellery designed by a man billed "America's Court Jeweller".Seaman Schepps, whose mid-20th century designs drew commissions from the White House, is the subject of an exhibition in the city's Gilbert Collection. Entitled Seaman Schepps (1881-1972): America's Court Jeweller, the show includes an oriental gold knight from about 1950, adorned with a sapphire bird and mounted on a sapphire, emerald and ruby base. Elsewhere in the exhibition is a piece designed for opera singer Marguerite Wenner-Gren - a bracelet which employs what the museum terms the "innovative technique" of using gold wiring to secure pink tourmalines, aquamarines, emeralds and amethysts. Meanwhile, the earliest known surviving pieces by Schepps - a pair of bracelets featuring diamonds in white gold - can also be viewed. Clients of Schepp included actresses Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn. The Gilbert Collection, based in Somerset House, was founded by the late Sir Arthur Gilbert.
