Gold coins are now to be offered to devotees of Hinduism as they look to provide the God Shiva with an offering in a temple in Jharkhand, eastern India.

To purchase one of the coins or so-called Prasad, a fee of Rs 2,500 (£31.27) will be charged by priests at the Deogarh temple so that devotees can pay homage to the Hindu God during an auspicious time.

Once a Prasad has been offered by a devotee and prayers have been made, the priest will give the gold coin back to the individual.

Sri Ramesh, a member of the Deogarh temple management committee, said: "We introduced the gold coins considering the large number of devotees who come here to pray and offer gold. The coin has an imprint of the Shiva temple on one side and the Shiv Ling (a symbol of the god) on the other side"

Towards the end of June, an auspicious period known as the Shrawan month will begin and in this timeframe it is predicted that approximately 2.5 million people will come and visit the Deogarh temple.
