Titanic gold watches go on saleFriday, 13th April 2007 (3864 views) Remains of the doomed ocean liner the Titanic have been put to use in a range of gold, platinum and steel watches, after years under water.Bits of coal and steel that were first utilised on the ship that sank when it hit an iceberg back in 1912 have been fashioned into the new timepieces. By using a little imagination, the new gold, platinum and steel collection was designed by a watchmaker from Geneva, Switzerland, Romaine Jerome SA. After showing off the new watches at a watch and jewellery trade fair, Baselworld, Yvan Arpa, chief executive of Romain Jerome SA, stated: "So many rich people buy incredibly complicated watches without understanding how they work, because they want a story to tell. To them we offer a story." The watches retailed recently for the first time in Basel, Switzerland, for between $7,800 (£3,900) and $173,100 (£87,000). In order to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's tragic maiden voyage in 2012, a total of 2,012 watches will be produced.
