Presidential coin hits the MintThursday, 15th February 2007 (3385 views) A new presidential dollar coin has been launched by the US Mint which is sure to attract the attention of collectors. The gold-coloured coin will feature America's first president George Washington and the director of the Mint, Edward Moy, has said that services such as laundrettes and car washes are "very coin-intensive" and therefore the coin could come in handy. A presidential dollar weighs 8.1 grams and its launch has been timed to coincide with Presidents Day which takes place on February 19th. Mr Moy stated: "This is based off a very, very successful program, which is the 50 State Quarter programme. It is the most successful coin programme the Mint has ever had. It generated 140 million people who are collecting these right now." Owner of Old Pueblo Coin - a store dedicated to coin collections - Rob Weiss told the Tucson Citizen that he was "excited" about the coin's arrival and he believes they will be "accepted". Later on this year, the limited edition George Washington dollar will be joined by coins depicting three other presidents; John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Every year for a decade, the US Mint will create four new coins that are emblazoned with the image of a different president.
