Dancer uses antique jewellery to celebrate gold

Friday, 19th January 2007 (4110 views)

A dancer from Taiwan is using antique jewellery to create beautiful gold adornments that can be used to jazz up clothing or even decorate the home.

According to the Taiwan Journal Awa Li recently celebrated the first exhibition of her handcrafted jewellery designs at the National Museum of History in Taipei.

Beautiful Legends, An Exhibition of Contemporary Interpretation of Antique Jewellery ran from November 17th to December 17th last year and included around 80 of some 500 pieces she had created.

A dancer for many years, Li said she was inspired to start making gold jewellery after becoming fascinated by the elaborate ornaments that adorned many performers' costumes.

She began making jewellery as a hobby but soon realised she had the potential to go into business when her designs began selling for $3,000 and above.

Jewellery can be a powerful and expressive symbol, and Li understand this. She focuses on re-arranging antique jewellery items to create her own new and unique pieces and says her experience in dance and music has influenced many of her works.
