Gold signet rings have been returned to Jakarta's authorities following their very temporary ownership by three of Bekasi's councillors.

Councillors Abdul, Manan and Gusnal were each given a gold signet ring for their time in office between 1999 and 2004.

The rings were meant as gifts to celebrate the work of the men while in office but the Bekasi Legislative Council has since found that the rings were purchased with council funds.

This makes the jewellery an improper purchase and so the council requested that the rings be returned.

2004's Presidential Decree in the country says that the state's budget cannot be used to purchase gifts and even though this rule came into force after the men had left office, it was decided that the rule should still be applied to the case.

Each ring is worth 66.6 million rupiahs (£4,000) and the mistake was uncovered by Jakarta's Supreme Audit Agency.
