Indian gold takes on coloured stone jewelleryTuesday, 9th January 2007 (3670 views) Gold has a new contender in the Indian jewellery market as coloured stones are hitting high demand. While gold is traditionally the most desired form of jewellery in the huge Indian market, Jaipur is fast emerging as a strong centre for the export and manufacture of coloured stone items, with the global rise in gold prices helping the market still further. Now seen as a vibrant and trendy alternative to precious metals, UK-based research firm GFMS has confirmed that the falling level of gold consumption in India has meant increasing numbers of shoppers are turning to modern alternatives. One trader told ZeeNews: "Fashion is changing; people want something new to wear everyday. "They can buy a couple of gold jewellery sets in a year but people want to wear some thing new daily that's where coloured stones come in." However, all is not lost for gold traders, for while younger trends are moving to the more colourful the "working women's" fashion area is tilting towards minimalistic looks, mostly involving light jewellery made from thin pieces of gold and platinum.
