Masonic gold ring goes on display

Tuesday, 2nd January 2007 (5438 views)

A gold Masonic ring found in Stafford County, Virginia, is to go on display at the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in Washington as part of a specialist Masonic exhibition.

The Supreme Council already has a large collection of decorative Masonic rings, and according to the Free Lance-Star the new plain gold band, discovered by a woman who was raking rocks in her back yard, will form part of its permanent collection.

Inscribed inside the gold ring is a man's name, a date from 1921 and a Latin phrase. Experts say the ring is the same as those given to members of the Scottish Rite.

Heather Calloway, director of special programmes at the Supreme Council, told the Free Lance-Star that most of the Masonic rings displayed in the exhibition are rather worn.

"You can tell someone really loved them," she said. "The value is more sentimental than monetary."

It is believed that the ring belonged to Frank John Clinton Zeising, whose name is inscribed inside the ring.

Zeising is not known to have had any siblings or children, however the Supreme Council says that if a living relative should come forward, the ring would be donated to them.
