Doha Sheraton hosts gold artwork

Thursday, 7th December 2006 (3637 views)

A brace of new exhibitions at the Al Majlis Hall of the Doha Sheraton in Qatar are currently displaying works of art from the Mughal courts, including many gold objects.

Dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, the Indian Mughal courts' collection comprises among other things of a gold perfume flask adorned with jewels and shaped like a fish, as well as an archer's gold ring that is decorated with an engraved ruby.

Artwork that has gone on display at the Doha Sheraton is intended to give visitors a taster of what is to come when a permanent exhibition begins at the end of next year at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha.

A piece of artwork with religious significance on display in the hall is a gold and enamel box that is decorated with the 99 names of Allah.

The exhibition will last until December 15th and entry to the collection is free. The Museum of Islamic Arts was designed by Leoh Ming Pei and was completed in time for the Asian games.
