50 gold sovereigns stolen from Indian train

Wednesday, 6th December 2006 (3494 views)

Police are investigating after gold jewellery weighing around 50 sovereigns was stolen from a train in India this weekend.

The jewellery belonged to a couple in their 50s who were travelling on the Chennai-bound Yercaud Express train on Sunday evening.

They were on their way to attend a function at Chennai and were reportedly carrying two suitcases containing the gold jewellery and several silk saris.

It is believed their cases were stolen while they slept, as they awoke when the train reached Tiruvallur railway station to discover that their bags were missing.

Police at Tiruvallur were alerted and the train was stopped for 20 minutes while a search was carried out. The couple have since lodged a complaint with police and police investigation is underway into the theft.

Demand for gold and gold jewellery in India typically rises during the final quarter of the year as jewellers stock up for the holidays and the Indian wedding season when it is given as gifts. As a result the price of gold jewellery increases.
