An American woman received quite a shock when a stranger turned up at her house and handed her a gold ring - that she had lost nearly 30 years ago.

After receiving a phone call about the 1970 class ring from Hoggard High School, Rita Rich finally became reunited with the ring that she had struggled to pay for with her cashier's wages.

The gold ring with a blue gemstone is engraved with her old high school's mascot, a viking, as well as the year 1970, as well as the initials RGT. Ms Rich told the Wilmington Star that the $70 (£36) she paid for the ring was "an awful lot to me back then".

It transpired that Mark Wade had possession of the jewellery item for around 20 years and had been searching for the owner by initially following up on the initials which refer to Ms Rich's maiden name, Rita Gertrude Thompkins.

Speaking of her gratitude to Mr Wade, Ms Rich said: "I wish I had a million dollars to give to this man."

When Mr Wade finally got hold of Ms Rich's contact details after years of trying, Ms Rich stated: "I thought the man was crazy. I was dumbfounded."

High school class rings are still used as graduation mementos today and are generally customised with initials like Ms Rich's.
