A man from northern England has had his life saved by a gold ring.

Brian Moran, 57, works in a Magnet factory in Keighley and had an accident with a circular saw because his employer had failed to fit it with a safety catch.

The blade sliced through his left hand, amputated his finger and continued right up to his wrist, splitting his hand in half. He believes his gold ring saved his hand by stopped the saw from continuing.

Mr Moran told his local newspaper Keighley News: "The strange thing is, it happened so quickly, I was astonished more than anything.

"People came dashing up and I was rushed round to first aid where it was bandaged up. Someone grabbed the finger and put it in ice, but the joint was so shattered it couldn't be used."

Magnet has been fined £8,000 for not having sufficient health and safety devices fitted and Mr Moran will receive £2,000 compensation.

His finger was saved but he has difficulty holding cutlery and won't go into restaurants for fear of embarrassment.

He has kept the golden ring.

Meanwhile in Ontario police have been auctioning off around 1,000 gold rings which have been confiscated during a failed smuggling coup in 1999.

All the rings are yellow gold with semi-precious stone insets.
