Luxury items made of gold tend be items of jewellery but now Russian company Gresso has come up with a gold phone.

Juxtaposing the unusual combination of African black wood and gold, the decadent mobile phone had to undergo special tests to see if the materials would be supple enough to be used in phone production.

A Gresso spokesman said: "The case of the phone is made from gold and African black wood, which is aged more than 200 years.

"Every Gresso phone is unique and singular. Two identical phones do not exist, just as in nature there are no two identical trees."

Sapphire anti-glare crystal glass has been applied to the screen's surface for extra durability.

So far Gresso has kept the designer of the phone a secret until the product has its official launch, but he is believed to be Italian.

The phone's chief rival comes from Nokia's luxury brand Vertu which has created an 18 carat gold handset, available in yellow or white gold, which sparkles with diamonds.
