Friday, 3rd November 2006 (5296 views) DeLafee International has created a product for chocolate and gold lovers alike, by combining the two to offer chocolate adorned with 24-carat edible gold.Luxury chocolatier DeLafee uses a blend of three cocoa beans from Ecuador, Venezuela and Ghana to produce its chocolate, and the product comes in one of two gift boxes. DeLafee's celebration collection comprises of eight chocolate bars covered in the edible gold, whereas the intimacy box contains two chocolate bars, each decorated in 24-carat edible gold flakes. For those curious about the fact that gold is used as a decoration on the chocolate, the metal has been proved to be safe to eat and is non-allergenic. According to the Swiss-based company, the chocolate that it produces is the most expensive in the world, with the intimacy box costing €28.82 (£19) and the celebration box setting customers back by €76.85 (£51.56). Eating gold is not such a recent pastime. Gold ingestion was documented by Chinese doctors and philosophers, whereas Pakistani doctors hailed it as an aphrodisiac and Japanese tradition suggests that eating gold at New Year is auspicious.
