Wednesday, 1st November 2006 (4947 views) A gold artefact from one of India's most famous temples has gone missing, according to reports. There are supposed to be five gold-plated bulbs in the Kedarnath Temple's kalash, or holy vessel and it has been shut since October 24th so the loss of one bulb is a mystery to officials. The kalash is situated in the country's Rudraprayag district and is amongst the holiest pilgrimages for Hindus. The stolen bulb was noticed yesterday by a group of officials belonging to the Kedarnath-Badrinath Temple Committee visiting the site. Authorities were informed of the missing item and the Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police Mr V Singh said efforts would be launched to trace the metal bulb. He did add however that it might not have been a thief who took it but that the bulb may have gone missing due to heavy windy conditions prevailing in the area. The temple was built 5,000 years ago within a very mountainous area of India. Heavy snowfall has recently hit the region and movement to holy shrines has been severely affected.
