Gold adornments have become the most popular jewellery items among consumers worldwide as increasing numbers of modern women use them to express themselves, according to a new study by the World Gold Council.

Indeed the research concludes that for many women gold jewellery is seen as not just an accessory but also a necessity, since it has strong emotional benefits in allowing them to look and feel their best.

The report reveals that since 2002 the purchase of gold jewellery has increased significantly across most of the world's major markets. The WGC says that much of this is down to the increase in personal wealth, particularly in developing countries, which is allowing more women to treat themselves.

But not only is gold jewellery seen as an essential fashion accessory and a way to reflect personality, many women are now also viewing it as a valuable investment thanks to the rising cost of gold around the world, the WGC says. This is adding to its appeal and providing a further reason for purchase.

Mr Moaz Barakat from the World Gold Council said: "The rise in the gold price over the past three years has not only added to gold's desirability, but has also provided a stronger justification for women to buy gold jewellery.

"This has in turn lead to the greatest expression of creativity. One can now buy a variety of styles, in combinations that were never before seen. It has once again reiterated the universal and undying appeal of the metal."
