Buyer beware private sales, warns DGJGWednesday, 4th October 2006 (4209 views) The Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group (DGJG) has warned consumers to be extra vigilant when purchasing jewellery from private sales and shows that are not authorised by the government. It is feared that many items of jewellery available at shows not sponsored by the industry watchdog may fall short of the standards set by the Dubai Central Laboratory Department (DCLD) – the body that ensures quality and authenticity. Despite the Dubai jewellery industry being heavily regulated to be certain that products are of the highest quality at all times, unauthorised displays sometimes fall below the DCLD radar, said Chandu Siroya, the DGJG vice chairman. "It has come to our attention that customers have been duped into purchasing substandard gold and diamond jewellery at private parties organised by unscrupulous operators," he said. "We would request people to be aware of such activities and refrain from purchasing jewellery at unauthorized shows." Levels of gold buying remain high and, despite this warning, are expected to remain so during what is the high season for jewellery purchases, particularly gold items.
