Precious coins break sales recordsTuesday, 19th September 2006 (4041 views) Sales of gold coins and other precious metals pieces at this year's ANA World's Fair of Money in Denver, Colorado have surpassed all previous records, News-Antique.com reports. An all-time high for a territorial coin of $948,750 was taken for the first lot at auction during the event, an 1852 Humbert $10 piece and western pioneer gold seemed to be the order of the fair as many others followed suit. Another Moffat & Co ingot, weighing less than an ounce and carrying a face value of $16, also sold for a substantial amount, finally crossing the block at $137,500 and two other Humbert pieces, both gold coins, sold for around $100,000 each. Two regular issue $20 gold coins made history by shattering the world record at just under $1.5 million, then a second, rarer coin went for over $1.6 million. The latter of the two is set to be given to a collector. Many other pieces, including rare silver, copper, and nickel items, also sold for high prices during what was described as a very successful event.
