Suadi women buy jewellery in their drovesMonday, 11th September 2006 (4934 views) Saudi women bought jewellery and cosmetics worth approximately $2 billion last year, according to trade statistics.The figure, reported in business journal Trade Arabia, showed that during 2005, Saudi females forked out a combined figure of $2.1 billion on gold, jewels, pearls, precious stones and cosmetics. Ministry of commerce figures showed that total imports of gold, pearls and other precious jewels reached SR 17.6 million per day, according to the Bahrain News Agency. The combinjed weight of these imports was 9,032 tonnes and the annual cost reached SR6.4 billion. Trade Arabia also quotes Arab-American newspaper Al Watan, which reported that cosmetic imports totalled 91.913, reaching a cost of SR1.8 billion.
