Indian authorities keep tabs on jewellery qualityMonday, 4th September 2006 (3971 views) The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is to set up around 500 surveillance centres in major jewellery-producing regions of the county to monitor production quality, according to the Indo-Asian News Service. The sweeping changes in tightening the authorities' grip on India's gold and silver jewellery market are an unprecedented step in the Asian nation. It has come about as a result of the falling quality of jewellery being sold to millions of consumers, P C Gupta said at the recent gold summit of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Gold and silver jewellery consumers, both tourist sales and domestic sales, make a substantial contribution to the annual Indian economy and the authorities are keen to show a firm hand in maintaining the quality of one of its most important industries. "The Department of Company Affairs has asked the BIS to set up 500 surveillance centres all over the country so that no cheating takes place," said Mr Gupta, adding that the centres would be operational in the near future.
