Golden glitz as Mauresmo gets All-England membership

Tuesday, 11th July 2006 (4092 views)

Following her Wimbledon Ladies final victory last Saturday (8th July), Amelie Mauresmo was officially awarded her All-England Club membership at the Wimbledon Champions Dinner on Sunday evening, Tennis Reporters.net reports.

One of the 400 guests at the gala event held at London's Savoy Hotel, Mauresmo wore a gold-sequined dress and was presented with a gold necklace featuring a medallion in the design of a tennis racket and a strawberry to represent her maiden title.

She was also awarded her circular blue membership badge for the All-England Club. All single's title winners are able to skip the twenty-year waiting list for membership.

"I was nervous on court yesterday," she told the various former champions assembled at the dinner, "but that's nothing to how I feel tonight."

Roger Federer, the winner of the gentlemen's singles earlier that day, congratulated Mauresmo on her title: "This is as good as it gets. It's been great to sit at the same table as you."

Federer was presented with a set of Wimbledon cufflinks. Traditionally the men's winners are given an official tie to commemorate their victory but as he already has three from his wins in 2003, 2004 and 2005, the committee felt they needed to alter the prize.
