An overwhelming majority of the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices' (CRJP) stakeholders believe that the council's Principles are a sound basis for promoting responsible practice.

The CRJP has consulted with stakeholders over the past months and finalised its Principles this year, Tacy Ltd reports. The resulting feedback demonstrates a backing for the organisation.

A group of people from different parts of the gold and diamond jewellery supply chain came together last year to form the CRJP, which aims to "promote responsible business practices in a transparent and accountable manner throughout the industry".

It is looking to cover "ethical, social and environmental issues across every step of the supply chain, no matter how large or small the business".

The people consulted believe that ethical, social and environmental issues were likely to become a greater influence on consumers' purchasing decisions in the future.

They also agreed that health and safety principles should be strengthened and that a system of monitoring business responsibility standards should be introduced.
