Two new gold coins have been issued in Malaysia to give children a greater appreciation of endangered species.

Part of a programme devised by Coin in Education (CIE), the aim is also to encourage the hobby of coin collecting amongst Malaysia's many youngsters.

The gold coins are made of Nordic gold alloy and cost RM5.50 apiece, available from a range of outlets including national zoos, the Royal Mint International and Royal Mint Exchange in Shah Alam and Bank Negara's currency museum.

There are 12 coins in the series, depicting a range of endangered aquatic animals, including turtles.

The latest two coins, both with a face value of 25 sen, are engraved with pictures of the painted terrapin and the bottlenose dolphin.

They join the green and hawksbill variety of turtles and the land animals and birds featured in previous CIE coin series.
