Dubai giving away gold barsTuesday, 20th June 2006 (4106 views) Dubai's jewellery shops and the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group (DGJG) are participating in a raffle designed to get more people spending on valuables, gold and jewellery.Around 50 retailers will be handing out raffle tickets with every purchase made over Dh250, with possible prizes including kilogram gold bars, diamond-studded watches, BMWs and airline tickets. People paying with a Mastercard credit card will be able to double their chances of getting lucky, eligible for two tickets instead of one. The grand prize is an apartment in Dubai International City, and there are instant scratch-and-win offers as well as weekly prize draws. The total value of the prizes given by DGJG is in the region of DH2 million, while the deal will last for ten weeks as part of the Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) programme. Tawhid Abdullah, managing director at DGJG, commented: "This is a great opportunity for jewellery shoppers and tourists to fulfil their lifestyle dreams." Moaz Barakat, managing director of the World Gold Council for the Middle East, Turkey and Pakistan, said that gold was performing well in Dubai, but the DSS would still provide a significant sales boost. He pointed to the fact that consumers had not been put off investing in gold, with sales increasing by ten per cent in the first quarter in spite of recent high instability in global commodities markets. "We expect the rest of 2006 to be good despite the gold price scenario," he added.
