Gold candlesticks fetch over £30,000Tuesday, 20th June 2006 (4196 views) Four 18-carat gold candlesticks were among the royal treasures to fetch a high price when some of the late Princess Margaret's belongings were auctioned earlier this month. The candlesticks, which each stand at a foot high and were a wedding gift from the South African government in 1960, were sold for £31,200. Manufactured by ES & Co of Sheffield, England, Sheffield Today reports that they were sent to the princess amid ongoing apartheid violence but she felt she had to accept them. The two-day auction held by Christie's on behalf of the late princess' children raised a total of £13.6 million from the sale of over 800 items. Among the other lots to attract higher-than-expected bids were a nine-carat gold and sapphire Cartier cigarette case, which sold for £100,000.
