NHL team officials to get own ringsThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 13th June 2006 (5662 views) Backroom officials for the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Calgary Flames, the two teams who contested the NHL Finals in 2004, are to be presented with their own commemorative rings, the St Petersburg Times reports.Normally it is major sports performers who are awarded rings for their achievements but a Floridian jeweller has designed special 14-carat gold pieces for each behind-the-scenes official from both teams. The 40 recipients will be officials assimilated with the Lightning and the Flames 20 from each team - time-keepers, instant replay judges and goal judges, among others. The rings are designed by Richard J Chador and display both teams' names on one side of the ring with the championship insignia on the other. Rings of this ilk have been intended for similar officials in the past but the NHL had rejected previous designs that were submitted, as they displayed the winning team's insignia and the role of officials is to remain impartial at all times.
