Princess Margaret's gold valuables to be auctionedMonday, 12th June 2006 (4255 views) The importance of gold in society will be highlighted over the next two days as Christie's in London auctions a collection of the late Princess Margaret's jewellery and other valuables. The auction, to be held on June 13th and 14th, will feature over 800 items that are thought to have a combined total value of more than £2 million. They include a Faberge clock embellished with gold and diamonds, which Christie's has valued at between £600,000 and £800,000, and a £5,000, nine-carat gold Cartier cigarette case. The former was given to Margaret, the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, by Queen Mary, while the latter was a gift from her father, King George VI. Francois Curiel, deputy chairman of Christie's, said: "Christie's are honoured to have been instructed to sell jewellery and works of art from the private collection of HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. "We will stage an auction that pays tribute to her glamorous style and beauty." The auction house says this is the first time ever that the private jewellery collection of a reigning monarch's sister has been offered for sale.
