Steelers collect 'one for the thumb'Monday, 5th June 2006 (3700 views) The Pittsburgh Steelers' Super Bowl winning team finally collected their long-awaited reward for their achievements during the NFL season just passed. On 6th February, the Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy and each player earned the right that day to an individual gold ring to commemorate the achievement. Those rings were awarded at a ceremony in Heinz Field, Pittsburgh last night, almost four months to the day after victory in Detroit at Super Bowl XL. Designed by team owner Dan Rooney, with assistance from running back and fan favourite Jerome Bettis and offensive leader and star quarterback Ben Rothlisberger, the ring features the five trophies won by the franchise since its inception. Each trophy is represented with a diamond, encircling the Steelers' logo, set into a simple yellow gold design, which features the player's name and number and the score from the Super Bowl game. "It's a beautiful ring," exclaimed tackle Max Starks. "It's a lot more than I expected."
