Grillz grow in popularityMonday, 15th May 2006 (5001 views) Gold grillz are not just for rappers anymore, nowadays everyone from sports stars to school kids wants a piece of the bling action.Grillz, which are removable mouthpieces that cover teeth, are usually made of gold, sometimes platinum. John Cho, owner of UC Gold in Corryville, US, told the Enquirer that it was grill-wearing musicians who started the trend, with songs such as Nellys Grillz really bringing the trend to the attention of the public. Matt Powell, a 21-year-old grill wearer, said: "Some people like it. Some people look at you like youre an alien. I like both reactions." He paid $511 for his white gold creation, while Omar Beckley, a 21-year-old from College Hill, US, invested $320 in his 24-carat piece for his top and bottom front teeth. Mr Beckley said: "They bring females to you. They say, 'Smile for me, daddy'."
