Gold jewellery sales in China have surged by almost a third across China for the month of April.

The latest statistics for retail sales show that compared to April 2005, this year saw a 29.5 per cent increase in consumers purchasing gold jewellery.

So far this year, the total amount of social consumer goods sold across the country has totaled 2.42 trillion yuan, according to reports from China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The news of the positive figures in gold sales comes just shortly after the 2006 Shanghai International Jewellery Exhibition took place

Over 400 exhibitors there are showing gold jewellery, gems and other items in what is the country’s largest event dedicated to fashion jewellery and accessories.
