Unprecedented success for Indian gold souks drives expansionMonday, 8th May 2006 (3599 views) Aerens Goldsouk, a fast-growing developer of jewellery retail space and business in India, has announced plans to expand operations in 100 cities in India and overseas. The company intends to build 100 jewellery souks in the UK, US, China, the UAE and Thailand, as well as all over India, aiming for at least ten new souks to be under construction or operational by 2009. The company's first gold souk was built in 2004, in Gurgaon, India. Around 70 gold and jewellery retailers, including nearly all India's leading jewellery brands, have units in the retail space. In its first year, the Gurgaon complex generated the highest ever sales for its retailers, in some cases the highest returns for thirty years, according to a spokesman for Aerens Goldsouk. The Aerens 'wedding souk' is newly opened in Delhi, offering a wide range of wedding products and jewellery in more than one hundred shops covering an acre of retail space. The company is said to be in advanced talks with ten or more international jewellery chains for investment in its expansion programme. Among them is rumoured to be Dubai chain D'damas, one of the world's largest jewellery retailers.
