Jeweller follows the Faberge egg trailFriday, 5th May 2006 (3920 views) A leading Atlanta jeweller has launched a new range of golden eggs that bring the quality of the world-famous Faberge eggs to the average consumer.Russian-born Ilya Abelsky, who arrived in the US towards the end of the Cold War in 1989, told the Cleveland Jewish News he had always been fascinated by the famous Russian artefacts. When in St Petersburg he had marvelled at the exquisite detail and finish of the bejewelled pieces collected by Russian royalty, only to find the eggs had followed his passage to America, as an exhibit came to town. "I was one of the first in line, he said. "And like everyone else, I was bewitched by the beauty of these treasures. I was seized with the idea to reproduce these eggs in the form of miniature jewellery and bring them to the American public." "Faberge made eggs for the royalty; I wanted to make eggs for the average person," he added. Mr Abelsky's eggs range in price from $150 to $1,000, coming in sterling silver with 24, 18 and 14-karat gold overlay. The first Faberge egg was created in the late 19th century as a gift from Czar Alexander III to his wife, beginning a long tradition.
