Christie's is to auction "important pocket watches and wristwatches" next month in Switzerland.

The lot in Geneva is said by the auctioneers to be "the most important sale ever to be offered in the history of the company".

Former regal timepieces are amongst the 451 that will go to auction, including an 18-carat gold Patek Philippe commissioned by a French royal family member in 1895. Christie's said that it expects up to $7.7 million to be made from the sale that also features pieces by Audemars Piguet, Rolex, Breguet, Cartier, and Vacheron Constantin.

This is not the only major pocket and wrist watch auction the firm is hosting, today a non-regal but nevertheless highly valued auction goes underway in New York.

Items likely to get the most attention at the Geneva auction include the royal Patek Philippe which is valued at $230,000 - $385,000; and another Patek Philippe wristwatch, this time of pink gold, valued at $423,000 - $577,000, formerly belonging to Russo-French composer Igor Marketvitch.

Bidding takes place on May 15th in Geneva but the actual time is yet to be confirmed by Christie's.
