Gold-gilded violin helps raise local fundsWednesday, 12th April 2006 (3772 views) A violin auction in Massachusetts has raised money for the Cape Symphony Orchestra and the Cape Cod Museum of Fine Arts, reports the Cape Cod Times. One of the jewels in the crown of the evening was a violin gilded with 24-carat gold leaf and 40 two-inch square works of art by local artists, designed by former Boston University professor Julian Baird. Professor Baird originally asked the artists to provide a signature that he could then use in the design of the violin to auction for charity, but many respondents sent him small paintings or drawings to use instead. "I think of myself as the impresario, not the artist of this work," he told the local newspaper. The gold-plated violin received one of the highest prices during the auction, eventually selling for $2,500. The highest grossing piece of the evening was a violin with a depiction of a seascape, designed by Christie Velesig, which drew $3,500 from the highest bidder. In all, renowned local artists decorated 20 violins, provided by local Falmouth company Johnson String, for auction throughout the evening. The final total raised by the auction is, as yet, unavailable.
