Derby drink will cost a mint

Wednesday, 12th April 2006 (3799 views)

This year's Kentucky Derby will feature one more facet of the hoi poloi lifestyle than normal – a mint julep costing $1,000.

The meeting is renowned for the lavish trappings of high society that adorn the Churchill Downs racecourse for the famous May event but observers agree that this seems to be another step above.

The julep is the traditional drink of the race and is customarily served each year in a silver or pewter cup. This year, however, those with a taste for the slow-sipping bourbon drink can partake in one from a 24-carat gold-plated container, through a silver straw.

A maximum of 50 of the special edition drinks, made with the Kentucky Derby's "official" bourbon Woodford Reserve, will be sold on race day with the proceeds going to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation for re-homing former racehorses.

"It was a collaborative idea with Churchill," said Wayne Rose, brand director of the bourbon. "We wanted to raise money for a cause. Woodford Reserve is very involved in the thoroughbred industry, so this was a great fit."

The luxury beverage will be served only on May 6th and will be made using Moroccan mint, ice from the Arctic Circle and sugar brought from the South Pacific.
