Arab state hosts leading jewellery showTuesday, 11th April 2006 (3640 views) The 20th biannual MidEast Watch and Jewellery Show has opened in Sharjah, on the Persian Gulf coast.The event was inaugurated by the ruler of the emirate state, His Eminence Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem Al Qassimi. Several other members of the Sharjah Amiri Court attended the function held at the Expo Centre, along with diplomats, government officials and 300 leading jewellers from around the world. Speaking after the opening ceremony, Chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI), Mr Ahmed Mohammed Al Midfa said the event was "awaited with much anticipation by the region's jewellery connoisseurs," and that local consumers had a "very high affinity towards gold and diamond jewellery". He added: 'The show, keeping up with its reputation of being the Middle East's most established watch and jewellery event, is displaying a very large range of both classic and contemporary jewellery'. Director general of Expo Centre Sharjah, Mr Saif Al Midfa said that the event was an "ideal platform" for the world's leading jewellers to reach out to the region's "high-spending and jewellery-loving consumers. "Despite the rise in gold prices, consumers particularly the UAEs [United Arab Emirates] gold market, continue to be in high spirits."
