Gold grills received one of their highest public endorsements yet in the final episode of a VH1 series featuring US rapper Flavor Flav.

The Flavor of Love finale, which featured the hip-hop star choosing his ideal date from among 20 female contestants, was aired on Sunday.

Close to six million viewers tuned in to see blinged-up superstar present the object of his desire with a 14-carat golden grill – record viewing figures for VH1.

Grills are basically gold teeth, sometimes fitted with diamonds or other precious stones and popular among the hip-hop fraternity.

With Flavor Flav renowned for his gold-laden mouth, the former Public Enemy rapper thought it only right to present his chosen one with a handful of mouth-bling to match.

Gold grills are becoming a familiar sight these days, with plaster-faced rapper Nelly recently releasing a song, Grillz, dedicated to the fashion accessory.

But they've also become popular with Hollywood A-listers, with chiselled superstar Johnny Depp among the growing army of fans.
