The US' love for gold grills is seemingly now engulfing neighbouring Canada.

Ottawa-based dental lab worker Michael Montenegrino kits out residents of the Canadian city with gold teeth grills, first made popular by US hip-hop stars.

And the craze is taking root in the Canadian capital just like it has in countless US cities over the last few years, according to Monetenegrino.

"It's a cosmetic device, like jewellery for your teeth," the 25-year old mouth decorator told the Ottawa Sun.

He added that the "sky's the limit" in terms of design, although 14-carat gold, platinum, diamond, rubies and emeralds all prove popular materials.

"I made one for a guy with 11 diamonds and 11 rubies, it was amazing," he enthused.

Generally gold grills come in two types – either open-face grills that expose the teeth or solid designs covering each tooth.

Costing up to $50,000 for deluxe models, grills are also now popular among the Hollywood set, with Johnny Depp and Madonna among the red-carpet treaders to have recently sported the look.
