Long-lost gold jewellery has emerged from the depths of Madrid's past as the city embarks on a major auction of its lost property.

The Spanish city has begun selling off a huge back catalogue of lost items in a bid to raise funds, with items dating back since 1924 up for auction.

Using internet site eBay, Madrid has put half a century's worth of trinkets up for sale, including thousands of watches, rings and other assorted finds.

Among the leading items in the auction at present is a gold, platinum and diamond cross which has reached €1,740, while a diamond and platinum bracelet, has quickly gone up from €3,000 to €3,800.

The city put up the items for auction after they steadily accumulated without being reclaimed.

While now an official registry exists for the processing of lost property, items lost prior to 1975 were simply left untouched – with the auction seen as the best way to dispose of some of the city's lost treasures.
