Jewellers' market changingTuesday, 14th March 2006 (3666 views) Understanding the recent shift in the market can help jewellers increase their sales, according to Time Style and Design editor-in-chief Kate Betts.Ms Betts told visitors to the Women's Jewellery Association's annual Women in the Know Conference on Friday (March 9th) that during the last decade the role of jewellery has changed from a status symbol to a celebration of original style. According to the National Jeweler, Ms Betts would like to see more explanation from top jewellers of the inspirations behind their designs. "Today, people are really looking for meaning in their investments, and a more individual means of expression," she said. The recent boom in the luxuries market and the increasing disposable incomes in India and the East, where gold is a favourite metal mean that there are currently numerous opportunities for Jewellers around the world to exploit. So much so that famous fashion houses are now trying their hand at designing accessories using gold and other precious metals. This has added to the cross-over and shift toward jewellery being used as an expression of style more than status.
