Heroes receive gold rings

Friday, 24th February 2006 (4200 views)

Heroes in Calgary received gold rings in recognition of their life-saving efforts.

Several people who had put their lives on the line for others were congratulated at the 4th Annual EMS Foundation Citizen Recognition Awards banquet, the Calgary Sun reports.

And the adults whose efforts were recognised received a silver-and-gold ring made by local paramedic Jeff McDougall, while the younger heroes received a stuffed dog with a medallion.

One hero was Jamie Robertson, who jumped to the defence of his neighbour when she was attacked by a knife-wielding criminal on Halloween. She was stabbed in the head and back but Mr Robertson managed to fight the attacker off and she survived.

Fly-fisherman Rod Edwards rescued a man who had fallen through the ice on the Bow River in March. He was almost completely submerged in the freezing watercourse but Mr Edwards helped him out and kept him warm until paramedics arrived.

And eight year-old Pheben Mekuria saved her mother's life by calling the emergency services when she had a seizure.
