Two competitions in Fiji on St Valentine's day awarded rings as prizes according to local reports.

Both the Fiji Times and Radio Fiji Gold offered rings as prizes on competitions to mark the day.

The Fiji Times gave away two in its 'His and Hers Rings' competition as well as consolation prizes. Radio Fiji Gold forced four female competitors for its 'Queen of the Ring' contest to dig through marble cake to find a nine-carat gold ring donated by a local jeweller.

Rummaging through food for rings is not uncommon around the Pacific. Indian food writer Laxmi Hiremath says it is a tradition that engaged couples plunge their hands into rice or lentils to find their ring.

The chance to win rings in Fiji's competition was reported by organisers as a hugely popular event amongst the public.

The rings were worth up to $600 and drew responses from all over the island.
